Obervations on a mildly entertaining weekend of college football from an elated Michigan fan:

  • Dan Hawkins should start updating his resume. Colorado got absolutely drubbed on Friday night (with no other games on, so the whole country could see) by Toledo. This game was never close. The Buffs are 0-2 and have yet to play a team in a BCS Conference. They play Wyoming, a team that was only down by 3 at halftime against Texas on Saturday, this weekend. If Hawkins' team can't find a win, he may be separated from his (bust) son who is playing QB for him. In case you were wondering, Colorado is still playing D-1 football (supposedly).
  • Florida is on a mission. Sure, the Gators have played Charleston Southern and Troy the first two weeks of the season, but they have been dominant for four quarters in both games. Other top teams have played hard for a half against their cupcake opponents, but Florida has shown no mercy. Tennessee comes to Gainesville this coming weekend for what could be one of the more entertaining games of the year, if nothing else than for the pre-game talking that's been going on since the day Lane Kiffin took over in Knoxville.
  • Teams need to start scheduling better games. There were three games that were worth watching on Saturday (Notre Dame/Michigan, UCLA/Tennessee and USC/Ohio State). The slate of games at noon was so bad we actually watched soccer on one of the TVs at the StadiumDrives complex. Teams in conferences not called the SEC need to schedule games against ranked opponents to get some more exposure and to keep me entertained on Saturday afternoons.
  • The Big 10 is not very good... again. Illinois was thrashed by an average Missouri team in Week 1, Michigan lost to Central Michigan (at home) this weekend and a few teams have eked out wins over awful teams (Indiana barely beat Eastern Kentucky, Northwestern escaped with a win against Eastern Michigan). Combine all that with another loss on national television for Ohio State and the Big 10 bashing will not stop. I'm starting to wonder if an undefeated Penn State team would even get in the National Championship over a one-loss USC team. There is one bright spot for the conference that I'll get to in just a moment.
  • Jonathan Crompton is, well, Jonathan Crompton. Crompton's stats from Saturday do all the talking: 13/26 for 93 yards, 0 TD, 3 INT. Yikes. I liked Tennessee to really pull things together on Saturday, so much so that I may have wagered on the Vols. But, the offense sputtered. The defense played with fire and intensity, the offense just played. UT is playing too many young guys to not have a leader to rally around. Crompton does not appear to be the leader they're going to be able to rely on.
  • Michigan is back in the top 25 for the first time since 2007. The Wolverines did just enough to win on Saturday to beat the Irish. Charlie Weis tried to out-think the room (again) by throwing twice in the 4th quarter when he should have run out the clock, ultimately giving Tate Forcier just enough time to get down the field and throw the game-winning TD. Forcier showed poise while throwing and running. He is the perfect QB for Rich Rodriguez and his system. The Wolverines still have a lot of football left to play, but optimism abounds for now.

I know it's only Monday, but who's ready for Week 3?
