FWP: No More Trades, Kind Of E-mail

Fearless Weekend Predictions is a weekly column running on Friday afternoons where our resident soothsayer (or whoever we can get) locks down what will transpire in the coming 72 hours. It’s better to get these out before the 7-year is open.  The crystal ball gets cloudy.

Happy Trade Deadline Day, people! Am I the only one who thinks that MLB's trade deadline is the biggest joke ever? Hey, no more trades... unless you put a guy through waivers. No one ever claims a player off waivers because it's not the gentlemanly thing to do. So, the trade deadline is extended for a few more weeks. I've never been able to figure out why the sports media goes to such lengths to make this a big deal. When the NBA trade deadline hits, there are no more trades made for that season, same for the NFL. If the NHL were relevant, I might know what its trade deadline rules were. So, this weekend, when everyone is saying how the trade deadline passed, look like the smart guy in your group of friends. There will be a handful of deals made long after the trade "deadline" has passed. On to the prognosticating...

  • MichaelVickMannyRamirezDavidBigPapiOrtizBrettFavre. I just wanted to get that out of the way. Vick will sign with a team this weekend. Manny and Ortiz will be scapegoats for what a LOT of guys in baseball were doing. Brett Favre will continue to make Peter King's head want to explode. Isn't the over-saturation of sports media great?
  • Tiger Woods will win the Buick Open. Tiger absolutely stunk at the British Open, no one can deny that. But, in his first tournament since that debacle he looks like the Tiger of old. After a mediocre opening round -1, he went off today. Tiger posted a -9 and was 7-under after his first seven holes. He's only two strokes off the lead at the moment, which shouldn't be a problem for him. Does anybody know who is Buick's main spokesperson is? Oh, that's right...
  • Tyler Hansbrough will take some time off. UNC's darling and Brubaker's man-crush has a shin injury which will require him to sit out for up to two months. That should put him coming back right about the time training camp starts up. What will Indiana do for their token white guy until then? They can always go with Troy Murphy... or Mike Dunleavy Jr... or Travis Diener... or Jeff Foster... or Josh McRoberts. I think they'll be okay.
  • At age 98, John Wooden will keep winning things. A SportingNews.com poll of 118 coaches pegged Coach Wooden as the greatest coach of all time. It's hard to argue with their choice (even though he may have been one of the biggest cheaters ever, but that's for a different time). The main issue I took with the poll was Mike Krzyzewski being ranked ahead of Adolph Rupp. Coach K has 40 fewer wins and one less national title than Rupp. And don't give me the Olympics stuff with Coach K. My mother could have coached that team to a gold medal. I think a few too many people saw Glory Road and used that as bias against Rupp.
  • Funny People will make me want to go to the movies. I haven't been to the theater to see a movie since September of last year (Burn After Reading, great movie). Since I'm already past the halfway mark of the year, I kind of decided I wouldn't go see a movie all of 2009. But, Funny People looks pretty good and has a bunch of funny people (get it?) in it. It also has Judd Apatow's attractive wife. Hooray for that. There's also something else I haven't done all of 2009, but that is sad and not appropriate for this site.
  • Pete Carroll will keep walking on the edge. First, it was the Reggie Bush scandal. Then, it was Dwayne Jarrett living with Matt Leinart. Now, Carroll supposedly had a "consultant" working for him last year who may have crossed the line into coaching which is an NCAA no-no. I am not a USC hater, but the Trojans need to be careful. They are a high profile university in a high profile city and everyone wants to take them down. Miami was a powerhouse in the '80s (remember 2LiveCrew on the sidelines?) and they crumbled. Florida State was riding high until the "Free Shoes University" disaster. Now, people are looking to take down the mighty Trojans. Pete, you may want to start obeying all the rules. Also, this was asinine.

Have a good weekend, folks. I promise not to send out multiple tweets about any WNBA All-Star Games this weekend... I promise! Sit by a pool, enjoy a beverage and don't forget to wish Grubby a Happy Birthday on Saturday.
