Quick sports fan, name the biggest event in the sports world this weekend. Nope, not the John Deere Classic (do they win a tractor for playing the best 72 holes of golf?). If you said Yankees/Angels you would also be wrong. Here's a tip, it's awful bloody, can end in less than 3 minutes (something I've never done), and draws one of the most loyal followings in all of sports. Give up? Try UFC 100 on for size.
This event in Las Vegas this weekend is sure to be sports' biggest draw. UFC has been growing like early 2000's NASCAR and it will all culminate with Brock Lesner taking on Fank Mir for the heavyweight title. Follow along after the jump for a little bit about these guys.
Fank Mir's story isn't the most interesting. He was born into a martial arts family and has been training to fight his entire life. At least that's what Wiki says about the guy. For all we know he could have been born into a hippie commune, trippin' on acid straight out of his baby bottle.
What is interesting about Mir is that he had a tough motorcycle accident back in '04 and has recovered to the top of his sport. Not too many people could do that. Mir is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and comes in as a slight underdog in the fight.
Lesner has quite the story in his background. A national heavyweight wrestling champion at Minnesota, Lesner moved on to become one of World Wrestling Entertainment's biggest draws. Lesner dwarfed most of his opponents in the WWE ring (no small feat) and entertained audiences for three good years.
Never meaning to make a career of acting, Lesner tried his hand at making an NFL squad. He played preseason ball with the Vikings but was cut prior to the season starting. His size and athleticism weren't quite enough to make up for his lack of football experience.
Things took another turn in Lesner's career when he decided to start MMA fighting. This culminated with his winning of the Heavyweight title at UFC 91. Lesner and Mir will be fighting for the unification of the Heavyweight title in Vegas this weekend.
We won't go into details on the two men's fighting styles because this isn't an MMA blog. We'll just say that we see the Golden Gopher staying out of the arm bar that lost him his first bout to Mir. Here's hoping Lesner outlasts Mir and that neither man ends up with any serious injuries because that shit is painful to watch.
